What is brain flossing?

The left-right music trend from TikTok, what it actually is, and what it can and can't do.

Brain flossing is the name TikTok gave to bilateral music: audio that moves from one ear to the other while you listen with headphones. Some people also call it brain massage music or bilateral beats. In early 2025 Bustle covered the trend, noting that a single bilateral track shared by a creator who posts about ADHD had gathered close to 500,000 likes.

What you actually hear

Put on headphones and the sound seems to glide across your head. It starts in your left ear, passes through the middle and lands on the right, then drifts back. Nothing else about the music has to be special. The movement is the whole idea.

Where the idea comes from

Bilateral stimulation is one part of EMDR, a structured therapy for trauma. In EMDR a trained therapist guides the client through eye movements, taps or tones that alternate left and right while they work through specific memories. Brain flossing borrows the left-right pattern, but not the therapy around it.

Does it work?

It depends on what you mean. Many people say it helps them calm down or focus, in the same way a breathing exercise or a calm playlist does. What there isn't yet is solid research on bilateral music by itself. So the honest answer is: it's a relaxation tool that some people love and others don't notice at all.

How to try it

  • Use headphones. On speakers the effect disappears.
  • Keep the volume low.
  • Close your eyes and just notice where the sound is.
  • Give it two or three minutes before you decide.
